CDC Updates COVID-19 Vaccine Recommendations
Following FDA regulatory action, CDC is updating and simplifying COVID-19 vaccine recommendations. New recommendations include:
- Allowing an additional dose of the bivalent vaccine for higher-risk populations, including adults ages 65 years and older and people who are immunocompromised.
- Monovalent (original) mRNA COVID-19 vaccines are no longer recommended for use in the U.S.
- Everyone ages 6 and older should receive a bivalent mRNA COVID-19 vaccine, regardless of whether they previously completed their primary series of the monovalent vaccine.
- Individuals ages 6 and older who have already received an updated (bivalent) mRNA vaccine do not need to take any further action unless they are over age 65 or immunocompromised.
- For young children, multiple doses continue to be recommended and will vary by age, vaccine, and which vaccines were previously received.
CDC will sponsor a Clinician Outreach and Communications Activity (COCA) webinar to review the updated recommendations on Thursday, May 11 at 2:00 – 3:00 pm ET. Click here for more information and to access the call.
