The Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) today announced that this year’s International Infection Prevention Week (IIPW), October 18-24, will shine a spotlight on the infection preventionist’s (IP’s) invaluable role protecting frontline healthcare workers and patients from COVID-19, and will encourage others to honor and thank IPs for their efforts.

Herd immunity (or community immunity) occurs when a high percentage of the community is immune to a disease (through vaccination and/or prior illness), making the spread of this disease from person to person unlikely. Even individuals not vaccinated (such as newborns and the immunocompromised) are offered some protection because the disease has little opportunity to spread within the community.

Nearly half (48%) of U.S. healthcare facilities surveyed are already out of, or almost out of respirators to use in caring for a patient with COVID-19, according to a national survey of infection prevention experts conducted March 23-25, 2020 by the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC).
