IP Academic Pathways
Academic Alignment with APIC: Advancing IPC Education
Through this academic initiative, APIC has developed guidelines for colleges and universities to offer certificate programs, as well as undergraduate and graduate degree programs in infection prevention and control.
While APIC has long provided a robust competency model and other resources to support professionals practicing in the field, these newly developed guidelines now creates a clear pathway for college and university students to pursue a career in infection prevention and control.
Aligning Your IPC Curriculum
We encourage any universities or academic institutions who want to align their programs with APIC’s Curriculum Standards and Guidelines to consider submitting an application to receive APIC’s acknowledgement of alignment.

Resources
These curriculum standards and guidelines are designed to assist educational partners who are developing and evaluating certificate, undergraduate, and graduate courses and programs in infection prevention and control.
The content in this guide supports the IPAP initiative by providing guideposts to programs interested in creating or revising a program and ensuring it is teaching the most critical and salient topics for students to have successful careers in infection prevention and control.
In the spring of 2024, a validation survey was conducted to ensure the accuracy, relevance, and credibility of the guidelines by gathering targeted feedback from stakeholders in the field of infection prevention and control. This process facilitated stakeholder engagement, identified areas for refinement, and provided valuable data-driven insights to enhance the guidelines and support informed decision-making within the field.
