Update on Marburg Outbreak in Rwanda

Rwanda has recorded 62 illnesses and 15 deaths from Marburg virus disease as of October 14. Most of those infected have been healthcare personnel working in ICUs in Kigali. No cases of Marburg have been reported in the U.S. or any country outside of Rwanda. Although the anticipated risk of Marburg in the general U.S. population is low, in an abundance of caution, CDC issued a Level 3 Travel Health Notice, recommending that U.S. residents reconsider nonessential travel to Rwanda. In addition, the Department of Homeland Security has redirected U.S.-bound air passengers who have been in Rwanda to three designated airports (New York JFK, Chicago O’Hare, and Washington-Dulles) to undergo public health entry screening.
