CDC Health Update: More Locally Acquired Malaria Cases in U.S.
The CDC issued a Health Alert Network (HAN) Health Update to share new information about a single case of locally acquired malaria in Maryland reported on August 18, 2023. The Maryland case is a different malaria species and unrelated to the seven cases identified in Florida and the one case identified in Texas earlier in the summer. The CDC advises that malaria is a medical emergency and should be treated accordingly. Patients suspected of having malaria should be urgently evaluated in a facility that is able to provide rapid diagnosis and treatment as soon as possible, within 24 hours of the patient’s presentation.
