FDA/CDC Shorten Booster Interval for Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine

1/7/22 — The FDA amended the EUA for the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine to shorten the time between the completion of a primary series of the vaccine and a booster dose to at least five months for individuals 18 years of age and older.The CDC followed suit by updating its recommendation for getting the a Moderna booster five months after the primary series. Current booster authorizations and recommendations are:

  • Pfizer-BioNTech – at least 5 months after completion of primary series for age 12+
  • Moderna – at least 5 months after completion of primary series for age 18+
  • J&J/Janssen – at least 2 months after primary vaccination for age 18+

Although any of these vaccines but be administered as a booster, only the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is approved as a booster for those age 12-17 at this time.
